Dogs need to go for runs and play, not just walks. For cats, please ensure they have multiple levels to explore and climb like a cat tree or shelving. You can even make your own game out of feeding like hiding food for them to find or throwing/rolling it around for them, which helps simulate hunting/foraging behaviours and keeps your pet active. You can also try feeding them with a “snack/food portion” ball or “food puzzle.” It is a ball/puzzle/special feeding bowl you can find at most pet stores that have a few adjustable holes/knobs that require your pet to play with in order to get the food out. Trying toys/lasers, taking outside on a leash (ensure you have parasite prevention!), etc.

Some of these illnesses include diabetes, arthritis, liver disease, lung disease, heart disease, heat exhaustion, skin disease, matting, high blood pressure, mobility issues, spinal disease, gastrointestinal disease, as well as overall shortening of your pet’s life span. Currently, over 50% of pets face considerable risk to their health due to being overweight or obese. This blog will focus on the problems associated with being overweight and what we can do about it. Having too much or too little fat is detrimental for your pet. Throughout February and March 2023, we’ll be encouraging pet owners to have their pets weighed, and their body condition scored at their local vets to help guide them to a happier, healthier future! Watch this space for more information coming soon.Your pet’s weight, muscle condition, and body condition are very important to the overall health of your pet. We’re working in partnership with Royal Canin to help tackle obesity in pets. Excess fat can also worsen other health problems - such as arthritis and breathing difficulties - as well as increase anaesthetic and surgical risks, all of which could negatively affect your pet’s quality of life. Overweight pets are more likely to suffer from health problems such as diabetes and urinary tract disease - symptoms tend to develop when they are younger and are harder to manage. In 2021, the Report showed that over 1.4 million pets had gained weight since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic - millions of cats and dogs are overweight, out of shape and struggling. Our annual PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report uncovers how healthy and happy the UK’s pets are. But, as many of us know, staying on track isn’t always easy. Just like humans, pets of all ages need to eat the right diet and have the right amount of exercise to live long, healthy, and happy lives.
